5 Important Summer Skin Care Tips
Your clothes change by the season and so should your skin care! In the winter, you need warm clothes to protect your body from the cold. The same concept is true in the summer for your skin! Your skin needs different products to protect it during the summer months.
Sure, you could continue business as usual and you might be able to get a way with it…until you can’t. Then you’re sitting in my studio in the fall wondering why your skin got in such rough shape. Let me help you avoid all that with my top 5 summer skin care tips, in order of importance!
#1 – Be Sun Safe
My clients will tell you; I always talk about the importance of wearing sunscreen all year. Wearing a high-quality SPF under your makeup is one of the best ways to prevent your skin from pre-mature aging. During the winter, when you’re not outside as much, most people are ok applying sunscreen in the morning for adequate protection.
In the summer, not only should you continue to apply sunscreen each morning, but if you’re out in the sun for extended periods of time, you need to make sure you re-apply throughout the day. This is where many people fall down. If you’re outside sweating, swimming or exposed to the sun for hours, you have to re-apply your product every two hours for continued protection.
Use makeup with SPF, protective clothing like wide brim hats, sunglasses and light weight clothing for added protection!
Here’s the next question I always get…but I want to get a little color for summer, how can I do that if I’m constantly applying SPF? I get it. Most people feel better with a summer tan. I can assure you, it’s not worth it. Find a good self-tanner or get an organic spray tan to get the color you’re looking for. Tanned skin is just damaged skin in disguise.
#2 – Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliation should also be part of your skin care routine all year. In the summer, it is important to continue exfoliating because you want to rid your skin of build up that could clog your pores and cause a break out. Exfoliating also helps with hydration and it preps your skin to properly absorb your products so they can do their job, which leads me to my next tip!
#3 – Keep Your Skin Hydrated
When you’re sweating or maybe feeling a little oilier it can be tempting to skip your moisturizer. But, you shouldn’t skip it all together. Instead, swap your winter moisturizer for a lighter weight product that won’t clog your pores and continue to use serums that promote moisture retention like my Hydra Restore Serum. Dry skin can lead to a number of problems so be sure to keep your skin is properly hydrated!
#4 – Add in a Product with Vitamin C
If you do get too much sun, or you just want to be proactive, adding a product with vitamin C is a great idea. Vitamin C can help improve skin damage that occurs after too much sun exposure and it can help boost collagen production which is great for repairing skin. I have an amazing serum that is going to be released soon. Keep an eye out for updates!
#5 – Don’t Over Wash Your Face
It might be tempting to wash your face more in the summer, especially when you’ve been sweating! If you add an extra wash in here and there that’s fine, but in general, most people only need to wash twice a day. Anything more can lead to dehydrated and even irritated skin!
